چکیده

This study presents a 1:25,000 geomorphological map of the northern sector Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula. The covers an area c. 250 km2, and documents landforms surficial sediments one largest ice-free areas in Antarctica, based on remote sensing field-based mapping. large-scale landscape features are determined by underlying Cretaceous sedimentary Neogene volcanic geology, which has been sculpted overlying ice masses during glacial periods. Paraglacial periglacial superimposed upon remnant features, reflecting post-glacial evolution landscape. can be broadly separated into three sectors, according to dominant contemporary Earth-surface processes; specifically, glacierised southern sector, paraglacial-dominated eastern periglacial-dominated central/northern sector. provides basis for further interdisciplinary research, insight potential future other parts Peninsula as climate warms.

Persistent organic pollutants in soils and sediments from James Ross Island, Antarctica.

Soil and sediment samples from James Ross Island were analyzed for their PCB, OCP and PAH contents. Soil concentrations ranged between 0.51 and 1.82 ng g(-1) for seven indicator PCB congeners, between 0.49 and 1.34 ng g(-1) for HCH congeners, between 0.51 and 3.68 ng g(-1) for the sum of p,p'-DDT, DDE, and DDD, and between 34.9 and 171 ng g(-1) for the sum of 16 EPA PAHs. Sediment levels from 0...

Glacial Geology of Cape Bird, Ross Island, Antarctica

Located on the northwest coast of Ross Island in McMurdo Sound, Cape Bird features virtually unweathered surface drift with erratics from the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) and with enclosed marine shell fragments. This Cape Bird drift is cut by Holocene beaches. The chronology of drift deposition and beach formation comes from AMS radiocarbon dates of associated marine shells, and of penguin b...

Definitive specimens of Merlucciidae (Gadiformes) from the Eocene James Ross Basin of Isla Marambio (Seymour Island), Antarctic Peninsula

An isolated partial right dentary (BAS D.515.2) collected by the British Antarctic Survey prompted a re-evaluation of gadiform remains from the La Meseta Formation (conventionally middle Eocene) of Isla Marambio (Seymour Island), Antarctic Peninsula. Modern gadiforms (hakes and cods) range from the Arctic to Antarctic, inhabiting deep sea benthic, shore, estuarine, and freshwater environments. ...

Nematode communities of Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, maritime Antarctica

The nematode communities of Antarctica are considered simple. The few species present are well adapted to the harsh conditions and often endemic to Antarctica. Knowledge of Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems is increasing rapidly, but nematode communities remain to be explored in large parts of Antarctica. In soil samples collected at Byers Peninsula (Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 126), ...
